Brake Testing

Compliance with HGV Brake Testing Legislation

Ensuring compliance with brake testing legislation is crucial for the safety and roadworthiness of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). As per the Road Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, every part of the braking system must be maintained in good working order. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) recommends a minimum of four loaded brake tests annually. By April 2025, legislation will mandate these tests, aligning with the updated standards to eliminate ambiguity and enhance safety. Operators should conduct risk assessments to tailor testing frequencies based on vehicle usage, age, and mileage.

For more details on brake testing and recommended practices, you can find additional information here. Or for comprehensive guidelines, the DVSA’s “Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness” offers detailed insights, available here.
