Brake Testing

Since January 2023, HGVs and trailers must be properly loaded, ideally to at least 65% of their total maximum weight, for their annual MOT brake tests. Historical data shows that many braking issues are only identified during loaded tests. Vehicles can use an Electronic Braking Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS) or a calibrated roller brake test to ensure meaningful and accurate results. Regular, thorough brake testing is crucial for road safety.

Compliance with HGV Brake Testing Legislation

Ensuring compliance with brake testing legislation is crucial for the safety and roadworthiness of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). As per the Road Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, every part of the braking system must be maintained in good working order. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) recommends a minimum of four loaded brake tests annually. By April 2025, legislation will mandate these tests, aligning with the updated standards to eliminate ambiguity and enhance safety. Operators should conduct risk assessments to tailor testing frequencies based on vehicle usage, age, and mileage.

For detailed guidelines, refer to the DVSA's Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness
